THE FIRST HALF OF 2023 OFFERED AMPLE REASON TO CELEBRATE AND THE SECOND HALF WAS NO DIFFERENT…

A big congratulations to Elzé, Kate, Ncedo and Lysette for passing their Post-graduate Diploma in Financial Planning. We applaud your hard work and perseverance!

Our financial manager, Silvino and his wife, Gerda, welcomed adorable twins Gia and Oliver in July. Baby Levi greeted the world in September and has only been a pleasure to parents Courtney and Navarone.

During 2023 we continued our support of the Africa A+ Schools by donating our recycled bottle tops to them. The pre-school teachers use the tops to teach their pupils to count, sort according to colour, make patterns, be creative and to solve problems. If you would like to get involved with this brilliant initiative, you can contact Anya at africaaplusschools@gmail.com.

Ladles of Loves Sandwich Drive

We celebrated Mandela Day 2023 by continuing our support of Ladles of Love’s Sandwich Drive. We managed to beat our 2022 record by more than 200 sandwiches with our winner, Elmari, contributing over 70 sandwiches.

The ‘Getting your financial affairs on the right track’ panel discussion for 20- to 35-year olds took place on 4 October. This event was hosted in support of The Financial Planning Institute’s Financial Planning Week 2023. Michael Maré presented on the benefits of insurance and proper estate planning and other topics included budgeting, investment and retirement planning.

SAYes mentees

On 5 October, we had the privilege of hosting the SAYes mentees at our office. The morning was spent discussing topics such as the basics of budgeting, simple versus compound interest and managing debt. It goes without saying that it was a wonderful morning and that we are looking forward to seeing the mentees again in 2024.

More about SAYes Mentoring

SAYes

Are you looking for a way to “give back” to make a better society in 2024?

SAYes provide a mentorship program for young adults that runs for 9 months each year, and they currently have space for new mentors.

Why being a mentor with SAYes is a smart move

SAYes have a very well-run program that will enable you to make a tangible difference to the life of a young adult in a safe and effective way.

Why we have been so impressed with their program

Many of us have engaged in work to help those in need with very mixed outcomes. SAYes would like their volunteers to achieve the best effectiveness possible with the time given. The secret sauce to their success is the training provided, structured engagement and dis-engagement as well as ongoing support.

I am concerned about ending up with another never-ending commitment

One of the great features of the programme is that it runs for only 9 months and they do not allow a mentor-mentee relationship to run for longer. This ensures mentees have the benefit of more than one mentor and it creates emotional safety for a mentor as the relationship is supervised by SAYes.

Becoming a mentor

SAYes operate in South Africa and the United Kingdom. The young adults being mentored by SAYes are aged 16 to 32 and are under-served.

Eligibility: mentors must be aged 26 or over, but can live worldwide and mentoring is done online via WhatsApp video calls.

Your time investment: 60- to 90-minute application; 60- to 90-minute fit evaluation; 24-hours mentor training (12-hours self-paced video lectures & 12 hours (4 x 3 hours) of tutorials); 30-minute matching sessions; and 45 to 60 minutes each week for 9 months (one-to-one e-mentoring sessions).
